A 32-year old man from Brooklyn, New York died Monday, January 5, 2026, after suffering severe burns over approximately 64% of his body during an incident that occurred on the property of Haines City High School the night before.

Haines City Fire Department and Haines City Police were dispatched to the school at 2800 Hornet Drive at around 7:19 pm in response to a fire alarm.

Upon the arrival of first responders, they found the victim lying in an alcove near one of the buildings with severe burns to his body. A gasoline container and lighter were nearby.

The victim was transported to the hospital but passed away early Monday afternoon.

Detectives from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene Sunday and assumed control of the investigation. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is also conducting an investigation.

A vehicle at the scene was located. It was used by the victim but is registered to his mother, who lives in Poinciana.

When detectives spoke with the woman, she informed them that her son had graduated from the school in 2011, but had since moved to New York. 

She said that her son has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.

“Detectives determined that the victim got onto the property by jumping over two fences. What his specific intentions were are still unknown, but the investigation is ongoing.” – Grady Judd, Sheriff

During a search of the vehicle, detectives found a half-full bottle of liquor and a burnt marijuana cigarette. 

According to Polk County Public Schools, property damage at the school was very minimal, and maintenance staff were able to complete all repairs on Monday. 

The incident will not disrupt the students’ learning, as they were not scheduled to return from their break until Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
